Brighton Pride to charge entry and cap numbers

Picture
Brighton Pride 2011 will charge entry and limit visitor numbers for the first time.

Organisers of the festival said they had to make significant changes after complaints about safety and litter at last year’s event.

Spokeswoman Judith Manson said she could not yet say how much entry would be, as festival organisers are still consulting with East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service about capacity.

But she said the price would depend on this figure and the cost of erecting barriers and paying for security.

She said: “We’ve spent the last five months listening. The message has been very clear – Pride has to change to be safe and enjoyable for everyone.

“There has been growing anti-social behaviour in the last few years It’s about making sure that LGBT people and their friends feel safe at Pride.

“It’s about giving the message that homophobic behaviour is not acceptable. If we see it, we have to do something.”

The theme for this year’s festival is ‘Out of this world’, which was chosen by local gay businesses and the event will be held on August 13th.

Last year saw more than 160,000 people joining the festival.

However, donations were not high enough to cover the £350,000 it costs to stage the festival.

Last month, the former chair of Brighton Pride said the festival needs a “radical” overhaul.

David Harvey, who ran the event between 2003 and 2006, said Brighton Pride was too straight, that LGBT people did not feel safe there and and that trustees could be breaching Charity Commission rules by “running a party disguised as a charity”.

He argued that Pride should be commercialised to allow it to start supporting community activities again.by

Pride Announces 2011 Theme

Picture
Pride in Brighton & Hove is delighted to announce the theme for this year's celebrations is OUT OF THIS WORLD. This follows a number of fundraising events to choose the theme which were held at the end of 2010.

The winning theme was suggested by The Zone bar on St James’s Street; Rachel Midgley from the Zone commented:

‘This is brilliant. It’s fantastic for all our customers and staff involved in the fund-raiser. Pride in Brighton & Hove is such an important event for the whole community we are proud to support the charity and look forward to an Out of This World Pride 2011’.

Never before has the theme been suggested by a local venue and competition was fierce. During October, November and December 2010 the Name That Theme competition saw ten venues champion their ideas: The Aquarium (Pride in the UK), Bedford Tavern (Once Upon A Time in Brighton), Brighton Tavern (Brighton n Beautiful), Charles Street (Pride at the Movies), Dr Brighton's (Pirates and Princesses), Jack Horner, Worthing (Pride in Panto), Marine Tavern (Pride at the Soaps), Revenge (Pride in Space), Vavoom (Around the World in GAYTY Days) and of course The Zone (Out of this World).

Pride in Brighton and Hove’s Festival Director, Judith Manson says:

‘Pride & No Prejudice will be a hard act to follow but now we’re looking forward to ‘Out Of This World’, as suggested by The Zone, and are committed to making the event live up to its name. We were thrilled by the effort and hard work the customers and staff put into the fundraising event in October 2010 which raised £206.27 for the charity’

‘Out of this World’ will be applied to everything Pride in Brighton & Hove does throughout the year and gives participants plenty of time to be creative, with endless possibilities.

Previous themes have included Pride Beside The Seaside, Pride Around The World, Pride The Musicals, Carry On Pride, Silver Screen, Heroes and Heroines and The Greatest Show on Earth.

Pride would like to thank the staff and customers of The Zone bar for this fantastic theme.

Pride History

Pride Brighton
The history of Pride in Brighton & Hove stretches back as far as 1992 when there was a very modest afternoon event on The Level. Since then it has evolved into the biggest free Pride festival in the UK and in September 2004 was awarded charitable status. Pride in Brighton & Hove runs a number of exciting events to help fund the organisation, the festival and the support for the local LGBT voluntary sector as well as bringing a wide range of people together who otherwise might not have such social access.

Pride in Brighton & Hove has hosted a week of community events during the Winter and Summer Pride Festivals. In August the Summer Festival culminates in a Pride Parade from the seafront, through the city to a busy festival in Preston Park.

The Pride Festival week, held in the summer, provides the platform and environment to provide events which not only cater for the diverse needs of the local LGBT community, but also act as a focus for LGBT visibility within the wider community. Official estimates indicate that the Pride Parade and Main Park event in 2009 attracted 150,000 visitors. Many of these participants were from the local LGBT community (estimated at around 40,000 people) of all ages, especially those who may otherwise feel marginalised such as LGBT teenagers from Allsorts and those from the Gay Elderly Mens Society. It also attracted many from the LGBT communities in London and rest of the country. Most importantly the wider population of Brighton & Hove join a celebration of the diversity of the city. The event is free to attend for anyone from any community, encouraging the culture of inclusiveness and acceptance of which Brighton & Hove is proud.

The Pride Parade & Main Park event are about community not commerce. The Main Park event is free to enter and there is a variety of community facilities, for example, the Women's Tent, Trans Tent, Line Dancing Tent and Access Tent. There is also recruitment outreach work from the Police forces of Sussex, Hampshire and Kent as well as the local Fire Brigade. Entertainment in the form of dance and cabaret tents is provided by local businesses. We work closely with the council, police and licensing authorities to ensure safe and successful events.

Pride in Brighton & Hove is self-funding in so far as it raises sponsorships, receives a grant from Brighton & Hove City Council and donations from events organised by local businesses and the staging of events throughout the year to raise funds. These also act as a continuing focal point for the local LGBT community. These events bring LGBT people together in a safe environment and the inclusiveness improves self esteem and provides a sense of belonging which helps to diminish the psychological effects of discrimination faced by individuals in daily life. 2010 will see a repeat of many of last year's events including the hugely popular Pride Companion Dog Show.

We facilitated grant-funded workshops for local people to learn skills for developing their own Pride Parade floats and costumes. We involve volunteers from all sectors of the local community and have in the past hosted international volunteers from Concordia.

Pride in Brighton & Hove Announces 2011 Dates

Pride Brighton
http://www.brightonpride.org
Following the announcement in September that Pride in Brighton & Hove was looking to move away from the traditional first weekend in August next year to avoid a clash with the opening of the brand new Brighton & Hove Albion American Express Community Stadium, Pride in Brighton & Hove can now announce the most anticipated date in its history...

Over the past two months Pride has been gathering feedback and working closely with all our partners to secure a date for the 2011 event and we are pleased to reveal that the Pride Parade and main event at Preston Park will be on Saturday 13thAugust 2011.

Judith Manson, Pride Manger said ‘Unbeknown to Pride, Brighton & Hove Albion have previously requested an away match on the first weekend in August so they would not clash with the Pride celebrations, it is now our turn to return the favour. We look forward to celebrating the opening of the Amex stadium with them and thank the management team at the Albion for their support.’

Martin Perry, CEO and Stadium Project Manager said ‘The club has asked the Football League for an opening home fixture to kick off the first season at the Amex. We hope they will look favourably on our request - and it is a great gesture that Pride has kindly offered to move from their traditional first Saturday in August in order for us, with the League's blessing, to kick off a new era for the Albion in style at our new home.’

Over the years Pride has become one of the city’s largest and most popular events. Now with the full support of the Council and other statutory partners the Board of Trustees is preparing the strategy for 2011 to ensure a safe and enjoyable event, which is affordable for the charity. This will be made public in the coming weeks
